Children First/Communities In Schools offers direct services and support services to children and families in Buncombe County in school, after school, and in their homes and communities.
- Student Support Specialists at Claxton, Emma, Estes, and Johnston Elementary and Eblen Intermediate connect students and their families to critical community resources that are tailored to their needs.
- Afterschool Enrichment programs provide a safe place to be after school for up to 80 at-risk students to receive homework help, a healthy snack, and enrichment activities.
In the Community
- Family Resource Centers help 300 English and Latinx families in crisis with a food pantry, clothing closet, emergency financial assistance, and parent workshops.
- Project POWER/AmeriCorps provides mentoring and enrichment activities to more than 1,000 at-risk youth living in Buncombe County.
In addition to direct and support services, Children First/CIS also provides advocacy and community education through the Success Equation to raise awareness of, and develop sustainable solutions to, issues affecting children and families and breaking down barriers of poverty.
